The Tickets Are Booked!

I have been a little travel drunk recently with money burning a hole in the travel fund.  Yesterday was the magic day where our wishes coincided with a seat sale.  In exactly three months from today we are going to...Mexico!  Yes, not a new country to us, in fact one which I have traveled to about 15 times - but we love Mexico and since we had originally wanted to do this trip last December and that got shelved due to my Stepdaughter moving in with us (and then back out again) we decided to go with the original plan.

The tickets have been booked to Cancun at half the price plus we were able to use $90 in travel dollars with Westjet that hubby had accumulated.  Now we just have to decide if we are going to Isla Mujeres (check out the blog Life is a Beach which is written by someone who travels there several times a year, great pictures!) which is a neat little island just off Cancun or the Playa Del Carmen/Tulum/Akumal area of Mayan Riviera.  I don't wish to stay in Cancun itself as we have done that once before and it is too big city, we like small Mexican towns instead.

So this year, it looks like no new countries - but one with clear waters for snorkeling, excellent food, lovely people and lots of ancient history.  We also intend to do a larger trip to Europe next year so as always, the savings for travel continues.  Yippee!

    1. Part of the reason I started reading your blog is that you spend so much time in Mexico!

  2. Its so exciting to get a flight booked! One of my friends is hoping to get to Mexico in a couple of years time for her 40th so she'll be excited to see your photos when you've been. xxx

    1. I love both sides of Mexico, the Pacific side has cooler water and not good for snorkeling but I love it there too - Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta are favorites. This time we wanted more snorkeling and the Mayan ruins so are going to the Caribbean side. We can't wait!

    1. I used to be a travel agent and used to go almost every year or every other. The past few years we moved, went to Costa Rica then Europe last year so it has been about 5 years since we have been to Mexico. I miss the food!

  5. We use the Westjet rewards credit card. I really like being able to use the points towards any flight or part of. We put everything we purchase on the card and pay off completely each month. Fortunately neither of us are impulse buyers, in fact quite the opposite.

    1. Hubby uses RBC Avion which is the very best in Canada as you can use points any time on any airline no restrictions so we are saving those for a ticket to Europe next year. I use the Air Miles Mastercard which was better when I could supplement them with Air Miles from Safeway but our Safeway closed so only can get airmiles a few other places and online - not nearly as good. I might look into that one as 100% of our trips back and forth to Alberta for us and the kids is on Westjet. We do the exact same, charge everything then immediately transfer the funds onto it. It is the only way to work these point cards without running into trouble.

  6. Congrats on booking! My vacation spot is just 45 minutes away. I want to book a room overlooking the gulf and do absolutely nothing but sit or walk on the beach for a week. I have to find a way to make it happen.

    1. You should! Sometimes they have great locals deals last minute. Save maybe a couple dollars a week until you have a fund built up like I do with the sealed pot weekend fund. Any spare cash gets tipped in there and now there are a few hundred as it has been saved over a year.

  7. This sounds AMAZING!!! Den has never left the country and I need to change this ASAP. You just reminded me to go get the paperwork for passports. Oh and when I get my passport, take me with you!!!!

    1. Get your passport - nothing will happen otherwise! You two really need to get out of the country! Best behave before you get them lol - just in case you need to take it on the lam :)

    2. Hahaha, you make me laugh.
I have to pay for Vegas and then its the passports. I want to go back to Vegas in Octoberish but Den doesn't seem to want to go. He wants to take a few fishing trips and he only has so much vacation time. I was thinking maybe we could drive to Niagara Falls once we have the passports. So many plans and so little cash.

  10. If you like quiet (and fresh seafood), go to Mujeres! But -- bear in mind that transportation is limited. You'll need to walk, take (expensive) taxis or rent a bicycle or golfcart. It's worth it, though. We just took the ferry to the mainland when doing any additional trips.
It's going to be hot there, and dusty. (You have to throw used toilet paper in the wastebasket instead of the toilet too...which takes some getting used to.) But not as many people go there, which adds to its allure.

Tulum is interesting, but the carvings and buildings are extremely weatherworn, and a million visitors have erased a lot of the distinctiveness. I'm not sorry we visited it, but it wasn't nearly as curious/fascinating as Chichen Itza. A much bigger site, with parts of it still unexplored and developing. (And the sacrificial well is REALLY creepy.) Go there first!

Your post brought up some wonderful memories. Oooh, I'm jealous...

    1. I've been to Chichen Itza last time so wanted to see Tulum as it will be very hot when we are there and can go swimming after. I am still on the fence about Isla. We might even use Cancun as our base after all as the rates for hotels there are much cheaper than Isla and the Mayan riviera area. I hate all inclusives and so many of the hotels there are all inclusive now :) I still will visit Isla Mujeres if we don't stay there though

  11. I can feel the excitement!! I've never been to Mexico but I will one day. I yearn to visit the Mayan riviera as I love to explore historical areas. Good choice for that travel money :)

    1. I love Mexico - the people are so friendly and hard working. The food is amazing, and I frankly feel safer there than a lot of U.S. cities. I would live there if hubby would agree to it lol

  13. I've never done one of these resort vacations in Mexico. It should be wonderful (again)! We lived in San Diego and used to drive across the border for the day. So never got very far and, sadly, the border towns don't represent the country well.
